Getting Started Case studies

Carrie, Social Work degree student

Carrie joined the degree course after taking a year out following her A-levels to work with people with learning disabilities. Age 20.

"I was drawn towards being a social worker because I wanted to work with people, especially children, and do something that didn’t mean sitting in an office all day. I got in touch with our local Social Services department about opportunities for volunteering and holiday jobs, and worked regularly in a day centre - helping to organise activities and run club sessions.

"I am really enjoying the course. You learn a lot about yourself, your values, and how you relate to other people. You’re asked to think deeply, and reflect on what you’re learning. In the second year I’ll be doing a 100 day work placement; and the same in the third year but in a different work area. Doing the course, you realise just how important social workers can be to service users, the influence they have, and the need to use it carefully. You’re going to be asked to make tough decisions that won’t please everyone, so you must always put your service user first."
